Coherent Introduces Portfolio of Smaller Ultracompact Components for Optical Amplifiers and LiDAR Subsystems
Coherent announced the release of a portfolio of more compact ultracompact parts on February 15, 2023, enabling optical amplifiers embedded in LiDAR subsystems and next-generation high-speed telecom transceivers.
The micro-pump laser, the variable optical attenuator, and the hybrid passive assemblies are just a few of the smaller, ultracompact components that Coherent, a pioneer in embedded optical amplifiers, is introducing. These components all have a very low profile of less than 2.5 mm.
The parts are offered separately and in custom assemblies, including those using Coherent’s erbium- and erbium/ytterbium-doped fiber. They have bend-insensitive fiber input and output on a single side and are available in standard or extended temperature ranges. Up to 400 mW of output power is offered by the micro-pump laser.
“We have achieved a level of miniaturization that is unmatched in the industry with a complete set of components that enable optical amplifiers to be easily embedded in small modules such as pluggable high-speed transceivers, in the very small QSFP-DD form factor, and miniature automotive LiDAR systems,” said Dr. Sanjai Parthasarathi, Chief Marketing Officer. “Leveraging highly automated assembly, these components will scale cost-competitively with the rapidly growing demand.”
Coherent Introduces 2×1000 mW Dual-Chip Pump Laser Module for Optical Amplification in Optical Networks
Coherent announced the first dual-chip pump laser module with up to 1000 mW of output power per fiber in a 10-pin butterfly package on February 14, 2023.
The development of optical transport networks with technology that allows for increased capacity and transmission reach is being driven by next-generation broadband and cloud services. A new class of optical amplifiers and amplified reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) line cards with increased bandwidth, functionality, and transmission range are made possible by Coherent’s new dual-chip pump laser modules.
The highly dependable laser diodes used in the dual-chip pump laser modules are semi-cooled and available in a range of operating power levels up to 1000 mW per fiber, with the option of assigning output power to each fiber.
This platform completes Coherent’s wide selection of pump laser modules, which come in single- and dual-chip designs, cooled and uncooled module designs, and various module configurations. Coherent provides a full range of top-of-the-line components for amplifier designers, including active, passive, and erbium-doped fiber.
“What is uniquely differentiated about the new Coherent dual-chip pump laser module is that it embeds two next-generation high-power pump laser diodes in a small-form-factor 10-pin butterfly package,” said Dr. Richard Smart, Senior Vice President, ROADM products. “Coherent was first to market with dual-chip pump laser modules in 2014, and we continue to show our advanced technology leadership by achieving the highest power in the smallest form factor across our pump laser module products.”
